Job Title: Senior Scientist
Job Category: Biotech/Life Sciences
Job Status: Permanent
Salary: C80k Neg €/ Year
Description: Our Client is a well-funded, high-tech, start-up based in South County Dublin Ireland. With the launch of its first-generation product in 2021, the company is targeting a large niche global market of disease and drug research organisations that is estimated to grow to €1 billion in annual revenues within ten years. Since their formation in 2015, they have won numerous national and EU awards for their technology and business proposition. They are now seeking to grow their organisation with the recruitment of a Senior Scientist who has the technical skills and management experience to grow the company’s research and development team.

The company’s unique product is a microscope which produces tomograms of frozen biological cells providing information on the internal structure of cells. This is critical to the understanding of disease causation and in the development of effective therapies and vaccines. At the heart of the technology is a very small laser produced plasma which produces soft X-rays and allows them to be efficiently coupled to the microscope.

They now wish to hire Senior Scientist to grow its research and development team based in Dublin. The microscope is currently producing 2D images of resolution test targets. The role will focus on the development and implementation of 3D imaging functionality and associated data collection strategies. Characterisation of the optical and mechanical performance of the soft X-Ray microscope will be essential. Ideally the candidate will be familiar with tomographic reconstruction techniques and will also assist with general microscope data analysis.

The position will report into the company’s CTO and the ideal candidate will be a multidisciplinary team player with a hands-on and dynamic attitude. The role will involve:

• System construction and testing

• Optimisation of 3D data collection strategies

• Development and test of cryo-imaging functionality

• Implementation of standard tomographic reconstruction routines

• Analysis of microscope diagnostic and imaging data

To take advantage of this great opportunity you will need to have a PhD in Physics or Engineering (or a related discipline) and ideally five years of relevant post-PhD experience. Excellent communication skills in English are key, as well as expertise in complex X-ray microscope development. Knowledge and experience in the following areas are essential:

• Experimental microscope characterisation

• X-ray tomography

• 3D reconstruction software (e.g. IMOD, Tomo3D etc.)

• Data analysis (e.g. Python)

In addition to the above it would be desirable to have exposure to:

• Bio-imaging

• Cryogenic sample handling

• Vacuum and laser physics

The Salary package will reflect the importance of the role and will be commensurate to your experience level as will the benefits package.
